James Dawkins - Research Intern
"My internship at Inclusion has been an extremely exciting and enjoyable experience. From the very beginning I was given a large amount of responsibility, but always felt able to ask for support and assistance.Everyone was extremely supportive of me and I was encouraged to get involved in a wide range of projects designed to help some of the most disadvantaged members of society.
"One of the most interesting projects I worked on was the St. Mungo’s Pathway’s to Employment evaluation. I visited two St Mungo’s hostels in London and interviewed key-workers and clients engaged in this initiative. I really enjoyed this aspect of the research as it provided me with the opportunity to talk to a multitude of individuals and understand the complex circumstances that lead to homelessness and unemployment.
"In addition to this, I was taught and shown how to use a wide range of qualitative and quantitative software and equipment; this includes SPSS, ATLAS.ti, NOMIS database and electronic Dictaphones.
"This internship has increased my knowledge on a multitude of issues revolving around unemployment & social exclusion. It has also allowed me to develop and strengthen my existing qualitative and quantitative research skills. I would encourage anyone looking to begin a career within the political and social justice arena to apply for an internship with the Centre for Economic & Social Inclusion. It has definitely helped me to break into this highly competitive area of employment."
