Stuart Deaton

Stuart Deaton

Stuart is Associate Director of Research at Inclusion. He has over eight years of experience in designing and managing research in the public sector, along with in-depth knowledge of local government policy and practice and the criminal justice system. He has particular expertise in qualitative research, using performance data and managing information for research purposes and literature reviews. Currently, Stuart is directing an evaluation of advancement network prototypes for the Learning and Skills Council, and an evaluation of the Pathways to Employment programme for St Mungo's.

Prior to joining Inclusion, Stuart worked at the Audit Commission and the Home Office. At the Commission, he designed and led three national studies, which considered local authority commissioning practice, fire service efficiency, and the role of the third sector in local public service delivery. He also re-designed the Commission’s research quality assurance procedures. At the Home Office, Stuart commissioned and managed research contracts for two large-scale evaluations of pilot schemes within the drug interventions programme. He developed a methodology for rapid evidence reviews and led a review on the effectiveness of drug treatment programmes for offenders.

Stuart has also worked at the Department for Communities and Local Government, analysing fire service incident data and contributing to annual national statistics bulletins. He examined data from the British Crime Survey and authored a report on householders’ experience of fires in the home.

Stuart is experienced in using SPSS and is a proficient user of Nvivo7 qualitative analysis software.
