Labour market statistics: August 2008

Chart 1 - UK employment (June 06 - June 08)

The numbers in employment are now definitely down compared with the last two months. The published figures use a comparison with the previous quarter (this is better statistically), and the quarterly change is down by 16,000.

Chart 2 - JSA claimant count (August 2006-August 2008)

The JSA claimant count has risen every month since January 2008. The total rise is now 110,000 people.

Chart 3 - JSA claimant count - new claims and leavers (August 2006-August 2008)

The rise in total JSA claimants is the balance between new claims (inflows) and outflows. Inflows have shot up since March 2008, but outflows have now started rising as well. Inflows are 18.6% higher over the year, compared to a 0.7% rise in outflows.
